During a hearing on a suo motu case on the coronavirus crisis in Pakistan, a five-member bench of the apex court observed that PM Khan's Cabinet has become ineffective in the fight against the pandemic. The bench questioned the integrity of Dr Mirza in tackling the COVID-19 crisis and the transparency of his work done.
Article 35-A, which was incorporated in the Constitution by a 1954 Presidential Order, accords special rights and privileges to the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir and denies property rights to a woman who marries a person from outside the state.
The plea filed by NGO Association for Protection of Civil Rights and others also sought a direction to the Centre to refrain from preparing the National Register of Citizens.

The apex court, which had earlier issued notice to the Centre on similar petitions, on Friday ordered tagging of the fresh plea of Tehseen Poonawalla with pending ones.

"We will examine the matter. Issue notice," the bench said, making it clear that there would be no stay on the decision.
Ashutosh alleged that Singh's remarks amounted to a violation of the SC/ST Act.

The bench said after perusing the report, if it came to a conclusion that an amicable solution through mediation was not possible, then the apex court would commence day-to-day hearing in the matter from July 25.
The apex court said that although the legislators are deemed to be public servants, their status is unique and certainly not one of a full-time salaried employee of any person, government, firm, corporation or concern as such.
Azad also accused the state and Centre of not being bothered about the people.

The apex court was hearing a plea of the NGO seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against the Union home secretary and chief secretary of J-K for their alleged 'wilful disobedience' in complying with the court's May 11 order. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has approached the Supreme Court seeking to intervene in the hearing on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, saying there was a need to take into account the "international human rights law, norms and standards" in the proceedings.
The court also asked the government to appraise it of the status of international arbitration proceedings to be undertaken in pursuance of directions of International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in the matter on April 13, the next date of hearing.
